ماهیت بیابان بر آن است که گسترده شود و با ریزدانه های ماسه هر آنچه هست و نیست را یکدست بپوشاند. تمایل به گستردگی بیابان در باد است تا ماسه ها را پراکنده کند و تشخیص راه را دشوار. شرایط سخت تر می شود وقتی گره هایی در این عبور را باید به دوش کشید. گره هایی که زمانی برای مقصودی به غیر از رهایی از بیابان بود.
