5 years ago, When I first set foot in the desert, I was fascinated by it. since then, and I have been spending my weekends in the desert for hiking and wandering. Sometimes I stay alone in the wilderness for days and nights in order to get a better understanding of the vastness of this eternity. In summer during the day time, it is scorching hot in the desert; therefore, I could not do any activity there during the day. I use the coolness of the night and travel in the desert.
The residents living in the vicinity of the desert believe that there was once a city in Rig-sara which -a location near of Khara desert- of which nothing remains now.
It is a strange feeling when you realize that under the sand dunes you are walking on, there was once a habitat of a society and now nothing remains of it, and this is an accident or an interaction between nature and artificial and man-made works.
I take mud brick from the ruins of villages which can be found on the fringe of desert. I put mud brick as a man-made symbol in the face of nature and create an arrangement that is far from the mind but is not.
Traditions and cultures are in interaction with nature. Sometimes they cooperate with each other, and sometimes they grow indifferent to each other, and sometimes, they are in conflict with the other.
By mixing the two elements of water and soil and heating them up in kilns with fire and air, our ancestors made mud brick. In the desert cities, the identity of the houses should be sought in it. in other words, our identity is created in it. But now mud brick has been left in the environment and environmental conditions are degrading the clay elements and returning them to their original state.
Desert trees with long roots that have endured the burning heat of the day and the coldness of the night; It is full of twists and turns. With the wind begins to blow, sand is swept away. the roots come out of the soil and the law of nature keep trying to dry the roots. The ecosystem of the desert is really fragile and the performances must be done with all caution and without harming the environment, that’s why I used dried wood and roots.
Usually when I return from long walks in the desert; I study the idea of performances. During the performance, I have to look for the woods with the desired shape, so I wander in the desert to find the branches and the roots which make sense in combination with the mud.
The implementation of each arrangement takes me at least one and a half days.it could be possible when the idea and etudes have already been made.
This project is entitled “Motherland” started at the end of 2021 and continues until now. The planned arrangements will be completed by Feb. 2023. This arrangement will imply the conflict interaction between tradition, culture and nature.
